Overview

[68Ga]PSMA-University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is an investigational diagnostic radiopharmaceutical developed for the detection and staging of prostate cancer using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It consists of the positron-emitting radioisotope gallium-68 (Ga-68) complexed with a ligand that specifically targets prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), also known as glutamate carboxypeptidase II. PSMA is a cell-surface protein that is highly overexpressed in nearly all prostate cancer cells, particularly in high-grade, metastatic, and castrate-resistant disease. Following intravenous administration, the agent binds to the extracellular domain of PSMA, allowing for the sensitive and specific visualization of primary tumors and metastatic lesions, including those in the lymph nodes and bone. This specific formulation has been evaluated in clinical trials at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center to compare its diagnostic performance against [F-18] sodium fluoride PET/CT for the detection of osseous metastases.
